The one time I tried trimming my horse's feet, I not only ended up sore, but she ended up with an abcess shortly thereafter and completely attributable to my intervention. (My farrier's wife had passed away and he wasn't working.)

How you manage is very impressive. Your own forge, too! You are more than a world away from here!

It helped that a former business partner was a trained farrier, from whom I picked up a fair amount.

Usually I have someone else hold up the foot, as is the local custom. That way I get less stiff. My back isn't in great shape.

I wouldn't recommend anyone untrained to try to trim a hoof, beyond rasping off rough edges if the hoof is ragged. It is possible to do a lot of damage by trimming too far, or in the wrong places.
