Tonight's post is brief, since I am going out to see the film Mongol.
This will be obliquely appropriate viewing since today is the anniverary of the Battle of Chalons, when that other famous nomadic equestrian barbarian, Attila the Hun, was defeated and thrown out of Gaul by a rare alliance of Romans and Visigoths.
Mongol has been compared to Lawrence of Arabia as a piece of cinema. David Lean did have the advantage of being able to speak to people who had met Lawrence, who helpfully left his autobiography. Russian film maker Sergei Bodrov had no such luck, and a challengingly low budget, but is reported to have made an impressive film nonetheless.
I shall post my report in due course.
